Signed Finland's NATO accession document in March 2024, completing a 180-degree shift in national security policy that he had publicly advocated for 15 years.
Alexander Stubb, as President of Finland, formally approved the North Atlantic Treaty Organization accession legislation on March 23, 2024, ending 75 years of military non-alignment. He first publicly advocated for NATO membership in a 2008 newspaper column while serving as Foreign Minister. Stubb earned a PhD in International Politics from the London School of Economics in 1999 and worked as an adviser at the European Commission. He entered the Finnish Parliament in 2011 and held multiple ministerial portfolios, including Foreign Affairs and Finance. As Prime Minister in 2014, he governed for ten months. Stubb won the presidential election in February 2024 with 51.6% of the vote in the second round. A triathlete who has completed 19 Ironman competitions, he applied the same discipline to foreign policy, methodically building consensus for NATO membership following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. His presidency formalized Finland's integration into Western defense structures, doubling NATO's border with Russia.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Alexander was born in 1968, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
