His pen gave Albania its national anthem, weaving themes of struggle and hope into verses that became a rallying cry for a nation.
Writing under the name Asdreni, Aleksandër Stavre Drenova was a voice of the Albanian National Awakening, a period of cultural and political resurgence. He spent much of his life abroad, in Romania and later Brussels, but his heart remained with his homeland. His poetry, collected in volumes like 'The Sun Rays' and 'Dreams and Tears', fused romantic lyricism with a potent nationalist spirit. His poem 'Betimi mbi Flamur' (The Pledge on the Flag), with its evocative imagery of sacrifice and destiny, was set to music and adopted as Albania's national anthem in 1912. Though his later work grappled with disillusionment, his early verses provided an emotional backbone for a country forging its identity.
