Biography

Albrecht Mertz von Quirnheim’s story is one of a slow, moral awakening within the belly of the beast. A career soldier who joined the Reichswehr in the 1920s, he initially served the Nazi regime, even participating in the invasion of Poland. But disillusionment grew, nurtured by friendships with fellow officers like Claus von Stauffenberg. By 1944, he was deeply enmeshed in the conspiracy to kill Hitler. On July 20th, as the plot unfolded in the Berlin Bendlerblock, it was Mertz von Quirnheim who, after Stauffenberg's departure, persistently pushed for Operation Valkyrie to be executed, personally typing the critical orders to mobilize the reserve army against the SS. When the coup collapsed, he faced the firing squad in the courtyard of his own headquarters alongside Stauffenberg, his commitment absolute to the final, stark flash of the guns.
