Biography

Alberto Iñurrategi represents a purist philosophy in high-altitude mountaineering, one where the how matters as much as the summit. From the peaks of the Basque Country, he and his brother Félix embarked on a project that was both simple and brutally demanding: climb all fourteen 8,000-meter mountains without supplemental oxygen. In an era increasingly marked by commercial expeditions, Iñurrategi's ascents were exercises in minimalism, relying on supreme fitness, deep acclimatization, and a profound respect for the mountains. His 2002 completion of the quest, making him the tenth person ever to achieve the feat, was overshadowed by personal tragedy when Félix died on the descent from their final peak, Gasherbrum II. That loss defined Iñurrategi's subsequent path, shifting his focus from personal lists to exploratory climbs in remote ranges and mentoring the next generation of Basque alpinists, always emphasizing self-sufficiency and the intrinsic spirit of adventure.

Generation X

1965–1980

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.

Alberto was born in 1968, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
