A steady-handed Anglican bishop who served as the spiritual voice for the diocese of St Albans and a thoughtful presence in the House of Lords.
Alan Smith's path in the Church of England was one of gradual, dedicated stewardship rather than seismic change. Ordained in the early 1980s, he built his ministry in parishes across the Midlands and northwest England, known for a pastoral style that favored listening and bridge-building. His appointment as Bishop of Shrewsbury in 2001 placed him in the heart of a diverse, rural diocese, a role he approached with characteristic diligence. In 2009, he ascended to the historic see of St Albans, where for over 15 years he oversaw one of the Church's largest dioceses. As a Lord Spiritual, he brought the concerns of faith communities to Parliament, often speaking on social cohesion, rural affairs, and gambling reform. Smith retired in 2025, leaving behind a reputation not for flashy pronouncements, but for a consistent, quiet commitment to the everyday fabric of church and community life.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Alan was born in 1957, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
