A swift and effective commander who orchestrated a brilliant victory in East Africa before facing the desert fox, Rommel.
Alan Cunningham's military career is a tale of two starkly different campaigns, marking both a spectacular high and a difficult conclusion to his field command. A gunner by trade, he demonstrated his strategic talent in 1941 during the East African Campaign. Facing vastly larger Italian forces, Cunningham executed a rapid and daring offensive from Kenya. Utilizing mobility and surprise, his forces covered immense distances, captured key Italian strongholds, and ultimately secured the surrender of over 200,000 enemy troops in a mere eight weeks. This stunning victory made him a hero. Promoted to lead the newly formed Eighth Army in North Africa, however, he faced a different kind of war and a different opponent: Erwin Rommel. The relentless pressure and fluid, brutal nature of the desert war against the Afrika Korps did not suit his more methodical style. After the inconclusive and costly opening phase of Operation Crusader, he was relieved of command. While this ended his combat leadership, he later served with distinction as the final High Commissioner for Palestine, navigating the complex and volatile end of the British Mandate.
