The beloved, football-obsessed Sultan of Pahang who served as Malaysia's king during a pivotal period of national growth.
Sultan Ahmad Shah ruled the east coast Malaysian state of Pahang for 45 years, a reign marked by his deep connection to his subjects and his profound love for sports. Ascending the throne in 1974, he became the seventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Malaysia's rotational king, from 1979 to 1984. His reign as head of state coincided with a period of significant economic modernization under Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. Known for his approachable, avuncular style, he was a constant, stabilizing presence. His passion was football; he was the long-time president of the Football Association of Malaysia and a dedicated patron of the sport. In 2019, citing health reasons, he made the momentous decision to abdicate in favor of his son, ending one of the longest reigns in Pahang's history.
