The real-life eldest von Trapp daughter, whose family's flight from Austria became the foundation for one of the world's most beloved musicals.
Agathe von Trapp's life was forever altered by history, art, and a musical that borrowed her story. As the quiet, artistic eldest daughter of Captain Georg von Trapp, she lived the childhood that would later be romanticized in 'The Sound of Music.' After her mother's death, the arrival of Maria Kutschera as a governess did indeed change the family's atmosphere, leading to music and, eventually, Maria's marriage to her father. The family's escape from Nazi-annexed Austria in 1938 was a tense, real-life drama, not a cinematic sing-along. As a member of the Trapp Family Singers, Agathe toured the world, but she often found the Broadway and Hollywood version of her life frustratingly inaccurate. She was the basis for the character Liesl, though she was notably older than her fictional counterpart. In later life, she settled in the United States, ran a kindergarten, and wrote a memoir to set the record straight, preserving the true story behind the legend.

She was portrayed as the 16-going-on-17 character Liesl in 'The Sound of Music,' though she was actually 23 when Maria married her father.
She felt the musical misrepresented her father as a cold disciplinarian, remembering him as a warm and loving parent.
Agathe was a talented visual artist and created many paintings and sketches throughout her life.
Unlike the musical, she and her siblings did not perform in a festival to escape the Nazis; they simply left by train for Italy.
“The Sound of Music simplified and sweetened our story. Our real life had more depth, and certainly more difficulty.”
