A central and controversial figure in post-communist Romania who rose to prime minister before a dramatic fall from grace.
Adrian Năstase's career mirrors Romania's turbulent transition from communism. A professor of international law, he entered politics as a key architect of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), helping to shape its modern identity. His tenure as Prime Minister from 2000 to 2004 was marked by Romania's decisive pivot toward the West, culminating in the country's invitation to join NATO. Domestically, his government oversaw economic growth but was also clouded by persistent allegations of corruption. After leaving the premiership, Năstase remained a powerful party figure until his legal troubles culminated in a 2012 conviction for corruption, making him the first Romanian prime minister sentenced to prison since the 1989 revolution. His complex legacy is that of a skilled political operator whose downfall came to symbolize the country's struggle with its own institutions.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Adrian was born in 1950, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
