Biography

Adolfo Nicolás Pachón was a man shaped by the margins. Born in Spain, his life's work unfolded far from Europe, primarily in Japan and the Philippines. He wasn't a career administrator but a teacher and pastor, spending over twenty years at Tokyo's Sophia University, immersing himself in a culture and religious landscape vastly different from his own. This experience gave him a unique, global perspective that proved crucial when he was elected the 30th Superior General of the Jesuits in 2008. His leadership was marked by a deep suspicion of clericalism and a push for the order to engage more profoundly with the poor and with other faiths. He guided the Society through a complex period, encouraging intellectual depth and a faith that 'gets its hands dirty.' After his term, he returned to the pastoral work he loved in Tokyo, closing a circle of a life dedicated to service beyond borders.

The Silent Generation

1928–1945

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.

Adolfo was born in 1936, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
