A Vatican diplomat for nearly four decades who became a cardinal and a bridge between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Christian worlds.
Achille Silvestrini's life was one of quiet, persistent diplomacy conducted in the corridors of the Vatican. Ordained in 1946, he entered the Holy See's diplomatic service in 1953, serving under several popes during the Cold War's most tense decades. He was a key figure in the Secretariat of State, helping to craft the Vatican's nuanced approach to international relations. In 1979, Pope John Paul II made him a cardinal, and he later took on a significant pastoral role as Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches. From this position, he oversaw the Vatican's relationship with the ancient Eastern Catholic Churches, working to support their traditions while maintaining communion with Rome. His career, spanning from the Second Vatican Council into the 21st century, embodied the Church's modern engagement with global politics and its own diverse spiritual heritage.
