An American sailor who, at 16, survived a harrowing dismasting in the Indian Ocean during her solo attempt to circumnavigate the globe.
Abby Sunderland grew up in a sailing family in California, and the water was her second home. Inspired by her older brother's similar quest, she set off alone at age 16 from Marina del Rey, aiming to become the youngest person to sail solo, non-stop, around the world. Her journey aboard the 40-foot sloop 'Wild Eyes' was followed by many, a testament to youthful ambition. After months at sea, disaster struck in the remote southern Indian Ocean when a massive wave broke her mast, leaving her adrift and in peril. An international rescue effort located her, and she was plucked to safety by a French fishing vessel. While the record eluded her, her story became one of survival, sparking global debates about risk, parenting, and the limits of adolescent adventure.
