Pearl

Birthstone for June

Pearl is the only gemstone created by a living creature. When a grain of sand or a parasite enters an oyster or mollusk, the animal coats the irritant with layers of nacre — the same iridescent substance that lines the inside of the shell — and over months or years, a pearl forms. Natural pearls are extraordinarily rare; almost all pearls sold today are cultured, meaning a technician inserts a nucleus into the mollusk to start the process. The finest pearls show a deep, even luster that seems to glow from within, a quality jewelers call 'orient.' Pearl has been valued for at least four thousand years, and in ancient Rome, a single exceptional pearl could be worth more than a house.

Why Pearl for June?

Pearl became June's birthstone because June was the traditional wedding month, and pearls have been associated with purity and bridal beauty since ancient Rome. The Vedic tradition also linked pearls to the moon, and June's position near the summer solstice — when moonlit nights are longest — strengthened the connection.
