Chrysanthemum

Birth flower for November

The chrysanthemum has been cultivated in China for over two thousand years and is one of the Four Gentlemen of Chinese art, representing autumn and integrity. In Japan, the chrysanthemum is the symbol of the imperial family — the Chrysanthemum Throne is the oldest hereditary monarchy in the world. The flower was introduced to Europe in the 17th century and quickly became associated with death and mourning in many countries, though in the United States it is simply a cheerful fall flower. There are over forty species and thousands of cultivated varieties, ranging from tiny button mums to dinner-plate-sized exhibition blooms.

Why Chrysanthemum for November?

The chrysanthemum became November's flower because it is the last major flower to bloom before winter. In East Asia, the chrysanthemum has been associated with autumn for over two thousand years. The Japanese 'Festival of Happiness' celebrates the flower in November, and in many European countries, chrysanthemums are placed on graves on All Saints' Day (November 1st).
