It mattered because it democratized and standardized aesthetic curation. The filters—X-Pro II, Earlybird, Sutro—were algorithms that could make a casual snapshot look professionally toned. The square format forced composition. The app turned every user into a publisher of a visually coherent personal brand. It shifted the social media emphasis from text-based status updates to a stream of curated imagery. It made the photograph, not the event it depicted, the primary social object.

A ground-level detail is the initial silence. The app had no video, no Stories, no ads, no algorithmically sorted feed. The experience was chronological and purely photographic.
