The avalanche that hit Flateyri on October 26, 1995, moved at nearly 100 kilometers per hour. It originated on the steep mountain of Bæjarfjarðarfjall, directly above the village of 350 people. The snow mass was estimated at 600,000 cubic meters. That volume is equivalent to 30,000 standard dump trucks. It crossed a defensive barrier dam built after a smaller slide in 1948, then plunged into the town's oldest neighborhood. It destroyed 29 homes and buried 45 individuals.
Rescue efforts began immediately in darkness and howling wind. Villagers dug with shovels and their hands. One man, awakened by the roar, was found hours later with only his nose and mouth exposed in an air pocket. Others were not so lucky. The final death toll reached 20. It was Iceland's deadliest avalanche in a quarter of a century.
The tragedy forced a reckoning with avalanche defense in remote coastal communities. The old barrier, a single earth wall, had proven catastrophically inadequate. In response, Iceland constructed a revolutionary system of deflecting dams above Flateyri, shaped like giant concrete wedges to split future snow masses. The design, inspired by similar structures in Switzerland, became a model for avalanche mitigation in the North Atlantic.
The event's obscurity outside Iceland belies its profound local impact. It erased a generation of families in a single minute. The new defenses, completed in 1998, have since successfully diverted subsequent slides. Flateyri stands as a monument to both the lethal power of its geography and the engineering response it provoked. The village persists, quieter now, sheltered by concrete geometry on the mountainside.
