Thirty volunteers hand-dyed and stitched two inaugural eight-color flags in the top-floor gallery of the Gay Community Center at 330 Grove Street. Each color held a meaning: hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic, blue for serenity, and violet for spirit. The flags were hung from the poles of United Nations Plaza on June 25, 1978. Their debut was not a corporate marketing campaign but a community art project, vulnerable to weather and commercial production limitations. Hot pink and turquoise were soon dropped because the fabrics were unavailable for mass production, solidifying the six-stripe version.
This act mattered because it provided a new visual language. The previous most common symbol, the pink triangle, was a relic of Nazi persecution, a symbol of victimhood reclaimed through defiance. Baker, a vexillographer and drag performer, argued the community needed a symbol of its own making, one representing pride, diversity, and unity. The flag's simplicity and adaptability allowed it to be reproduced, altered, and embraced globally without centralized authority. It became a tool for visibility in marches and, later, in everyday life.
The flag's origin is often stripped of its specific San Francisco context and its creator's intent. Baker did not design it for a generic 'gay community' but for a local, activist-led parade. Its adoption was gradual, not instantaneous. It competed with other symbols like the lambda and the labrys throughout the 1980s. Its current ubiquity is the result of decades of use, not a single day's revelation.
The flag's impact is its democratization of symbolism. It spawned countless variations representing bisexual, transgender, and other LGBTQ+ identities. It is projected onto government buildings and painted on crosswalks. It is also burned and banned. Its journey from hand-sewn fabric to global icon encapsulates the movement's journey from the margins to the center of political and cultural life, all while retaining its core assertion of the right to exist in full color.
