On July 29, 1987, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and French President François Mitterrand signed the Treaty of Canterbury, authorizing the construction of a tunnel under the English Channel. The document was a masterpiece of bureaucratic language, but its purpose was elemental: to physically stitch Britain to the European continent for the first time since the Ice Age. The air smelled of polished wood and faint perfume. Camera shutters clicked like metallic insects, capturing the firm handshake that followed.

Workers would soon begin boring through chalk marl, a soft but stable rock layer beneath the seabed. The project required eleven massive tunnel-boring machines, each longer than a football field, chewing forward at a rate of about 250 feet per day. They created three parallel tunnels—two for rail and one for service—with the precision of a surgical procedure. The cost was estimated at £4.65 billion, a figure that would balloon. The human scale was immense: over 13,000 engineers, technicians, and laborers, many living in temporary camps on the Kent coast.

The event mattered because it made a geopolitical metaphor concrete. The Channel had served as a moat for British identity and security since 1066. The tunnel rendered that moat obsolete. It was a statement of European unity in the late Cold War, a commitment to connection over separation. Economists predicted a surge in trade and tourism; skeptics warned of increased migration and threats to British sovereignty.

The Channel Tunnel opened in 1994. Today, the Eurostar train covers the underwater section in about twenty minutes, a transit so routine its geological audacity is forgotten. The lasting impact is a normalization of a connection once deemed impossible, turning a historic barrier into a commute.
